I came to the United States 17 years ago from Mexico and getting accustomed to a new life and a new language was difficult, so I struggled for the first few years in this country. Both my parents were born and raised in a small farming town and due to this, they never had the opportunity for much education, as their farm work took precedence. Due to this, my mom was determined to bring me and my brother to the United States so we could have the opportunity that was denied to her and my dad. Growing up and having to figure out everything about school mostly on my own was challenging, but my parents were very supportive. I worked various jobs through high school and when I graduated, I enrolled in community college, obtained my Associate's in Science, and transferred to UNC Charlotte. I have always been a shy person and my initial experience at UNC Charlotte was scary and intimidating but I slowly made friends and asked for help. I am currently a senior in the Civil Engineering Technology program and I am proud of my accomplishments. The journey has not been easy but it has been worth it.
