I am a First-Generation graduate student, and for me that has meant learning how to build the path while walking on it. When I came to UNC Charlotte, I was also adjusting to a new country, a new campus, and a completely unfamiliar academic environment. There were many moments when I felt behind, unsure, or out of place, especially when it seemed like everyone else already knew how college systems worked.
What kept me going was reminding myself why I came here in the first place. My family made sacrifices so I could have opportunities they never had, and I did not want to take that lightly. Over time, UNC Charlotte became more than a university to me. Through my classes, campus jobs, and involvement with students across campus, I started building confidence and finding a sense of belonging.
Being First-Generation has taught me resilience, humility, and how to keep moving forward even when I do not have all the answers. It has also made me want to help other students feel less alone. My story is not just about getting a degree. It is about growing into someone who can create space, support, and encouragement for others too.
